Returning, 2026
Acrylic on canvas
24” x 24”
Set along the shoreline of Lake Huron, this painting reflects a landscape shaped by water, land, and sky.
The work uses the Zorn palette of yellow ochre, red, black, and white, a limited range traditionally associated with portrait painting. Applied here to the landscape, the palette unites figure and land into a shared presence.
The immensity of the sky offers a sense of contemplation and perspective. This relationship to space invites openness and humility, qualities that feel deeply connected to the Canadian landscape.
The title, Returning, speaks to movement beyond physical space, suggesting a passage through time as well as place. Having grown up in Bright’s Grove, this work signifies a personal return, alongside a broader impulse to revisit land and water as sources of orientation, reflection, and meaning.
