BIO

Andrea Brand is a multidisciplinary artist based in Kincardine, Ontario. She holds a Fine Art Diploma with Honours from Georgian College.

Working in drawing and painting, she finds inspiration in the natural world, often exploring our connection to place. Through gestural strokes and layered textures, her work traces the lines between land and light, presence and absence.

In her recent charcoal work, she allows fragments to fall freely below the horizon line. This distinctive approach, which she refers to as fallen charcoal, invites gravity, motion, and chance to become part of the mark making.

Alongside this, Andrea explores landscape painting using an intentionally limited palette of yellow ochre, red, black, and white. This colour collection, with its notable absence of blue and green, is known as the Zorn palette and is typically associated with portrait painting. Adapting this to the landscape, she approaches the land as a subject rather than a scene, allowing restraint, tonal relationships, and openness to hold the emotional weight of her work.

As an avid wilderness canoeist, Andrea’s practice is rooted in direct experience.

Arriving by canoe and painting en plein air, her artistic vision is shaped by backcountry journeys into landscapes once visited by the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson. Movement through the land, changing weather conditions, fatigue and physical limits all become part of the process, bringing an essential energy to her overall practice.
