Andrea Brand is a multidisciplinary artist based in Kincardine, Ontario. She holds a Fine Art Diploma with Honours from Georgian College.

Working in drawing and painting, she finds inspiration in the natural world, often exploring our connection to place. Through subtle gestural strokes and textures, her work traces the lines between land and light, absence and presence.

In her recent charcoal on canvas work, she allows fragments to fall freely below the horizon line. This distinctive approach, which she refers to as fallen charcoal, invites gravity, motion, and chance to become part of the mark making.

Alongside this, Andrea has been exploring landscape painting using the Zorn palette of yellow ochre, red, black, and white. This restricted range of colours is traditionally associated with portrait painting. Adapting this limited palette to the landscape, she approaches the land as a subject rather than a scene.

Andrea is currently working towards combining fallen charcoal with the limited palette, allowing restraint and tonal relationships to carry the emotional weight of her work.

As an avid wilderness canoeist, Andrea’s practice is rooted in direct experience.

Arriving by canoe and painting en plein air, her artistic vision is shaped by backcountry journeys into landscapes once visited by the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson. Weather, light, fatigue, movement, and time all become part of the process, bringing an essential energy to her overall practice.
